Prop 92 Students

Voter Information on Prop 92
Community Colleges Funding, Governance, and Fees Initiative
by Ann Nicholson, President

As individuals who work at the Coast Community College District, we all appreciate the significant role that the California community colleges play in the education of young people who are seeking a college education or training in a technical career. In fact, California community colleges educate 84% of the total number of students in California’s public higher education systems.

The February 5th ballot will contain Prop 92, entitled the Community Colleges Funding, Governance, and Fees Initiative (also referred to as the California Community College Initiative). If approved by voters, Prop 92 will:

• lower fees to $15 a unit,
• limit future student fee increases,
• provide stable funding for community colleges for more classes and services, and
• guarantee that the community college system is independent from state politics.

If Prop 92 passes, it is estimated that the Coast Community College District will receive an additional $11.8 million in state funding in the first year alone. These funds could address many of the needs of the District, including hiring additional staff, maintaining excellent health benefits, and adding new programs.
